OBJECTIVE :-
The Principal objective of the department of Steel and Mines in Govt. of Orissa is to
Lease out the potential mineral bearing area so the interested entrepreneurs and individuals on merit as per the guidelines specified under Mines and Mineral (Development & Regulation)Act, 1957. Mineral concession Rules-1960 & Minerals conservation & Development Rules, 1988 (Amended )
To collect the royalty on the mineral off take from the leased out area
To check & curb clandestine mining operation and smuggling of Gemstone and other minerals.
Hence there is a set up headed by Mining Officer & having four field staff and three office clerks situated at Phulbani having jurisdiction over both Phulbani and Boudh Districts.
GOAL :-
There is a uprising trend of fixing target and collection of royalty in the previous years. This year too collection of royalty has been targeted at Rs. 200 lakhs against the last; years 135 lakhs. Till now Rs. 28,75,729.00 has been collected and there is every possibility of reaching and crossing the target this year too. In the matter of leasing fresh leases only 2 nos. of M.L. & 8 nos. of P.L. applications are pending in the district level which shall be forwarded to the Govt. soon.
ACHIVEMENT :-
In the district of Boudh three leases for decorative and two leases for Quartz were granted and executed in favour of the individuals and companies illustrated below. Now only one Quarry lease at Baisipada under Harabhanga P.S. is running. The three leases granted earlier have been expired in the meanwhile and only one Q.L. over 45.494 Hects. In the name of Mr. S.R. Asaithambi is running at present.
Besides all the above there is a huge area in the Mahanadi river bed where Diamond land other valuable Gemstone were found from the river sand. A lot of illegal activities goes on during the summer and property worth crores goes smuggled. This can be curbed of the general public shall extend a hand of co-operation to the district administration in giving information and surrendering the valuable to the Govt. agencies in lieu of suitable cost.
